Luka Carter
Art Guide
(He/Him)
I was the eldest of four siblings growing up in Los Angeles and as a gender non-conforming child with a robust imagination and overflowing creative energy, I encountered many barriers to acceptance and support within the education system I was raised in. Since then, I have strived to be a mentor and role model for inclusivity and education in the spaces that I now belong to.
I received a BA from Colorado College, where I majored in Studio Art. After college, I lived in Rockaway Beach, NY, and Hudson, NY, where I found and fostered an amazing interconnected community centered around Art, Food Systems, and Activism. After a brief stint for three years getting my MFA at the University of Georgia and two years living semi-nomadically and teaching at /attending various institutions and residencies, including Anderson Ranch, Colorado College, Chautauqua Institution, and Dreamsong Gallery, I am grateful to return to the Hudson Valley to lay down roots further. My art practice includes zines, ceramics, clothing, and furniture, and I look forward to sharing my diverse skill set.
This past year, I had the pleasure of working as an Art and Movement guide with the secondary school at Montessori Schoolhouse in Tucson, Arizona. Although much of the Montessori philosophy was something that I had already intrinsically adapted into my pedagogy, fully immersing myself in the Montessori environment was eye-opening and gratifying and, in many ways, helped replenish my own love for learning. I look forward to continuing my Montessori journey and supporting students' art-making adventures. You can find me biking, cooking, or doing any board-related activity when I am not at school or in my ceramics studio.
