Spanish Guide

I am originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, and lived there for a short time as a child. When I was two, my family immigrated to Upstate New York. I grew up speaking only Spanish at home and learning English in school. I am a proud DACAmented immigrant, daughter, sister, and friend in my community and family. While these experiences presented several challenges growing up, they also gave me perseverance, dedication, and strength.

I’ve always been interested in education, as a learner and as someone guiding others to learn. Now, 22 years later, this passion has led me to earn my B.A. in Education and Spanish from Smith College. Throughout my time at Smith, I was motivated to look at the education system in the United States from a critical lens and question mainstream methods, aiming for a more just and equitable learning environment. I have worked in various capacities with students from elementary to college level as a tutor and lead classroom teacher. Within these experiences, I have observed the importance of learning a language, especially at a young age, and, more importantly, viewing the learner as a whole being. Upon graduation from Smith, I received my Spanish Teaching License and enjoy using the skills I’ve learned to share a language I love.

When I am not guiding children in their Spanish journey, I spend loads of time with my family and friends. I also volunteer for a non-profit organization called Culture Connect based in Rhinebeck and Red Hook. When I have time just to myself, I enjoy reading Spanish and Latinx authors, listening to podcasts, dancing and singing to Spanish music, and hiking trails in the Hudson Valley.
